AREC Race Results Index

In 1998, when I moved to Long Beach, I began tracking race results of AREC members. At that time, I developed the AREC Grand Prix. The scoring of points is explained on the top of each result page, but here is a history of how the points have changed over the years:

• 1998. It was possible to get 0 points, but finishing a marathon would guarantee 1 point.
• 2001. 2 bonus points for completing marathon-plus distance race. Guarantee of 1 point for completing a race (if no other points awarded).
• 2002. 2 bonus points for each 25 mile segment of racing (in other words, a marathoner got 2 bonus points, a 50-miler got 4 bonus points).
• 2006. Top 3 AREC males and Top 3 AREC females receive finisher's points. Also, any race under 2 miles is worth 1 point, regardless of place or Personal Best.

AREC Awards

Also beginning in 1998, AREC gave out various awards at the end of the Grand Prix year (which now corresponds with the Long Beach Marathon pasta party in October). These awards included the Top Ten Grand Prix finishers (which you can see in each Result Listing), Most Improved, and Runner of the Year.

In 1999, we added Best Age Group Finisher.

Also in 1999, we added Most Prolific Runner (for most races run).

In 2000, we added Most Inspirational Runner.

In 2000, we added the Century Club (for runners who complete 100 miles in racing for the year.

In 2000, we split the Runner of the Year into separate Male and Female Categories.

In 2002, we added Rookie of the Year.

In 2006, we obtained perpetual plaques for the Runners of the Year and Most Inspirational Runner, and renamed the Most Inspirational Runner award after Heather Stevens, who died in 2006, at age 38, after a 3-1/2 year battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

"Mile" Stones

For runners who have been members of AREC for quite a while, they reach various milestones in racing mileage.
Once a runner reaches at least 1000 miles, they receive a certificate at the Year-End Award Ceremony with membership in the MILLENIUM Club.
